Out of Line

I don’t write many poems that are more suited to the page but this is one of them. I’m not trying to make some urgent political statement. I just enjoyed subverting expectations through line breaks.

Out of Line

Two off-duty policemen attacked
in the early hours of the morning
a young man walking back
from a party to celebrate
their first year in the job.

The police officers claim
the young man struck them
as suspicious because he was
approaching people in the centre of town and asking
for it.

A police spokesman said
that unprovoked acts of violence
against innocent citizens
was totally unacceptable
from highly trained police officers
when not on duty.

An Inquiry has-been lunched
at the Savoy
but made no comment.
